In the process of launching a new school newspaper, a survey was conducted to gather insights from students regarding preferred content, format, and overall direction. This report outlines the creation of the survey, its findings, and a brief evaluation of the group’s collaborative process.
Questionnaire design
The aim was to design a straightforward yet comprehensive survey, minimizing effort from respondents while collecting valuable input. Multiple-choice questions were chosen for the majority of the survey, allowing for quick participation and reducing time commitment. A broad range of options was provided in each category to reflect diverse preferences. The questionnaire was handed out to students of the language classes.
Key findings
The response rate was lower than anticipated, with only 34 students participating from a precedent of 10 classes. Despite the limited sample size, the results offered valuable guidance. Future surveys should expand outreach to obtain a more representative response.

One of the most notable outcomes was the decision on the newspaper’s name. ‘De VIIO Gazet’ was the most prominent choice, with the majority of respondents expressing their preference for it. In terms of format, there was a strong preference for both a digital and paper version, suggesting a dual format would best meet students’ accessibility needs. Regarding publication frequency, the majority (27 out of 34) preferred a monthly release. Fewer students favored quarterly publication or alternative intervals. Regarding content, the most valued sections were news (27 votes) and puzzles like Sudoku and crosswords (28 votes). Interviews (24), comics (19), and opinion pieces (18) also received notable support, indicating interest in a varied and engaging layout.
Another important insight was interest in student participation. A notable number of students (26%) expressed willingness to contribute, with journalism being the most popular role, followed by layout design and interviewing.
A particularly striking result was the strong preference for a “Teachers’ Corner,” supported by 91% of respondents in favor of a section where teachers share insights, study tips, or stories. Additionally, 85% favored the inclusion of anonymous messages and satire.
Conclusion
Though based on a smaller sample, the collected data provides essential guidance for the development of ‘De VIIO Gazet’. To ensure broader representation, increasing survey participation is recommended. The collaborative process among group members proved effective, as everyone contributed ideas that were successfully incorporated into the project.
