Should AI be integrated in the educational process?

We live in a world where digital progress is not optional, but rather a daily reality. Technology contributes profoundly the way we live, communicate, work and learn. Imagine how the world would look like if every innovation, from the pen to the computer, would have been rejected. We wouldn't have evolved.  AI will eventually be integrated in the school systems, it's our choice of how we do it and the question is simple: will we be stuck on pilots or will we have the courage to build an educational system built for the future?

Education has to keep up with the challenges from the 21 century. In a rigid system where teachers are overwhelmed and students misunderstood, AI is rarely efficiently integrated. It's time for an adaptable and equitable education. 

Teachers can benefit from the use of some analytical systems which study data from online learning portals, classroom attendance and grades. This data provides insights into student performance, helping educators identify trends and tailor instruction to address gaps in understanding and performance. They can also generate personalized lectures for every student based on their level of understanding and way of learning. This improves the students' academical performances by far and also makes room for a deeper connection between them and their professor since they can focus more on their learners since AI takes on some of the easy, but long lasting tasks. AI won't replace teachers, it'll only be an additional support, but many people are afraid of this happening. 

AI involves using algorithm-based technologies to solve complex problems by carrying out functions that require human-like perception, reasoning, and action. AI systems are built on data, hardware, and connectivity to analyze information, recognize patterns, and make predictions or decisions to improve their performance over time. AI can't function on it's own so it can't replace teachers, it needs someone to take orders from. AI can also transmit false informations since it takes it's data from the internet where anyone can publish anything without a filter. The teachers' role comes here to select only the corect facts so the students don't learn inaccurate material.

According to a study published in Frontiers of Psychology by Leslie Echols from UCLA, teachers—second only to parents in influencing children’s development—act as behavioral models. The way they integrate AI into their educational practices therefore shapes how students perceive and use such technologies. When teachers rely on AI not only as a learning aid but also for tasks like grading or lesson planning, students may misinterpret AI as a replacement for personal effort rather than a tool for growth. This misunderstanding can lead to dependence, with students using AI to complete assignments or exams without genuine comprehension, ultimately hindering their ability to think critically or work independently.

A 2024 global survey by the Digital Education Council supports this concern: 86% of students use AI regularly, and 18% include AI-generated content directly in their work. However, while ChatGPT is the most popular tool, many students admit they lack sufficient AI literacy and do not feel ready for an AI-driven workplace.

From a psychological perspective, unrestricted integration of AI in schools risks creating a cognitive imbalance—favoring algorithmic thinking over heuristic, intuitive reasoning. Education is inherently human, grounded in emotion, creativity, and critical thought. If overused, AI may erode these qualities, fostering conformity and dependence rather than innovation. Therefore, while AI can be valuable in technical domains, its educational use must be carefully guided to preserve the human essence of learning—autonomy, emotional engagement, and the capacity for original thought.
