Population aging is a global phenomenon. Among the most affected countries are Japan, China and Korea. With an increasing proportion of elderly people in the population, it is essential to understand the causes and challenges that this demographic change brings.

One possible cause for this problem is the increase in life expectancy. This has increased from 45 years in 1950 to 72 years in 2020. Another cause could be the decrease in fertility. Families have fewer and fewer children. If in 1960 it was common for a family to have 5 children, in 2020 the average is 2 children.

This change can also bring with it problems such as:

Pressure on the health system. The increase in the number of elderly translates into a greater demand for medical services and care. Chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, are becoming more common, requiring special attention from the health system.
Pensions and financial sustainability. With a shrinking working population and a growing number of retirees, pension systems face major challenges. It is crucial to rethink pension policies to ensure their long-term sustainability.

Social isolation. The elderly are often vulnerable to social isolation, which can lead to mental health problems such as depression. It is important to develop programs that encourage social interaction and their integration into a community.

The labor market. With a growing elderly population, young people face fierce competition for jobs. Many organizations prefer experienced employees, leaving young people to struggle to find opportunities in their desired fields.

Social resources. As social resources become increasingly focused on the needs of the elderly, young people may feel they are being neglected. Education, mental health and other social service programs could suffer, leaving young people without the support they need.
