Trump’s pinky promise

Have you ever wondered what actually happened during Trump’s meeting with Zelenski at the White House? I’m sure many of us have seen at least one clip of it, either with their fight, or the “why aren’t you wearing a suit?” but most of you probably didn’t have the time to watch the full meeting so in this article we’re gonna break down some of the topics that were discussed.

For some history background:

The war in Ukraine began in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea, a move that was widely condemned by the international community. Tensions between Ukraine and Russia had been building for years, especially with Ukraine's increasing ties to the West and aspirations to join NATO and the European Union. In 2022, Russia escalated the conflict by launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, citing concerns over NATO's eastward expansion and Ukraine's alignment with Western powers as key factors behind the attack. The invasion led to massive destruction, loss of life, and displacement of millions of Ukrainians. Despite widespread global condemnation, Russia's President Vladimir Putin justified the war by claiming it was a "special military operation" to protect ethnic Russians and Russian speakers in Ukraine, which is a narrative disputed by many.

As of March 26, 2025, the situation remains tense, with ongoing fighting in eastern Ukraine and Russian-held territories. Ukraine has received significant international support, particularly from NATO countries, including advanced weaponry and financial aid. Despite fierce resistance and some territorial gains by Ukraine, Russia still controls parts of eastern and southern Ukraine. Diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire or peace agreement have failed, and the conflict continues to strain global relations, contributing to energy crises and food insecurity. The war has led to substantial economic and human costs, and the international community remains divided on how to best resolve the conflict.

Now that we understand the cause of the war and United States’ contribution in the war, we can talk about it.

After watching the whole meeting at the White House, I came to a few conclusions. A lot of the same things were repeated over and over, so I’ll go over them again and share my thoughts.

One of the main things Trump talked about was how great he is at making peace. He claimed he stopped wars before they even started, some that people had never even heard of. He also said that the war in Ukraine wouldn’t have happened if he had been president. I think that’s a big exaggeration and ignores the real reasons behind the war. While the U.S. is a powerful country, Trump seems to believe an American president could have completely stopped the war before it began, which isn’t really how things work. The U.S. has played a big role in supporting Ukraine, along with Europe and the EU. Under Biden, America has sent a lot of money and weapons to Ukraine, but Trump criticized this during the meeting.

Another thing Trump did a lot was compare himself to Biden. He kept saying Biden didn’t handle the war well. When talking about a possible ceasefire, Trump insisted it would work, even though Ukraine’s president, Zelensky, said it wouldn’t be enough. Trump’s argument was that Putin wouldn’t break the ceasefire because he “respects” Trump, unlike Biden or Obama. But when a reporter asked what he would do if Putin did break the ceasefire, Trump dodged the question by saying, “What if anything? What if a bomb drops on your head right now?”

Trump also claimed that he isn’t taking sides in the war. This could be a smart strategy because if you want to make a deal, you can’t let the other side know you support their enemy. But at the same time, it makes some people wonder if he actually supports Putin.

In conclusion, the meeting was marked by Trump repeating his usual talking points about being a better leader than Biden and how he could solve any problem, including the war in Ukraine. However, most of what he said lacked concrete explanations, and instead of answering tough questions, he chose to avoid them. How can we take seriously the claims of a leader who offers no real solutions and prefers to dodge important questions? Is it truly realistic to believe that one leader could have prevented such a complex conflict with deep-rooted geopolitical causes? Isn’t it overly simplistic to think that everything hinged on a personal relationship with Putin?
