Set in the picturesque landscape of Sibiu, Astra Museum is a captivating place that breathes life into the tradition of Romania. This verdant sanctuary is dotted with authentic, historical structures such as wooden churches, traditional homes and windmills, all brought from all parts of Romania to the second largest open-air museum in the world. The museum has created an idyllic setting that transports visitors back in time, in a fairytale. It’s in this natural and historical place that the National Competition “Traditional Arts and Crafts” takes place, offering a unique blend of cultures, natures and history. Artisan children from all over Romania gather to showcase their skills in painting, reviving techniques passed down from generation to generation. This event is not just a competition, but a living exhibition where visitors can witness the meticulous techniques of painting. Interactive sessions allow attendees to engage with the artists and integrate the process behind each painting.

The competition features a diverse array of sections, each showcasing unique aspects of craftsmanship. Glass painting integrates designs and vivid colors, while wood painting reveals detailed motives inspired by biblical images. Saxon painting, with its distinctive patterns, reflects the cultural heritage of the Saxon communities in the region of Transylvania. Pottery demonstrations reveal the skill of shaping clay into functional and decorative items, using ancient techniques. Egg decorating, known as “încondeierea ouălor”, captivates the visitors and the jury with its meticulous patterns and vibrant colors, transforming simple eggs into stunning works of art. Each section celebrates the rich artistic tradition of Romania.

An important member of the jury, Benonia Centea describes the primary goals and objectives of this competition:” Even though handcraft is no longer studied in school, students are interested in continuing the work and tradition of our ancestors. There are things that are done with dedication, with trust in the children's strengths. Everyone chooses an art to master their techniques and pass on their craft. Many of the former participants and winners have become instructors to teach the next generations and this is something that makes us proud, knowing that our heritage as Romanians will not die. Passing on and keeping the tradition alive is the biggest goal of this competition. What impresses me is when all the prize-winning children, dressed in different folk costumes from all parts of Romania, gather on the 100 hectares of the museum. You can see an entire country in three days!”
