I chose the book ‘Fantastic Beasts; The Crimes of Grindelwald’. It is written by JK Rowling, also renowned for her Harry Potter series. The genre is mostly be fantasy, but there is also a little bit of romance between the characters.
The story begins with Grindelwald, a notorious prisoner in Azkaban, (enveloped by coldness and horrible storms). He escapes without anybody knowing and starts with his terrible plans of taking over the magic world. As the story progresses, he gathers a lot of followers for the ‘final’ battle.
The main character of this story is Newt Scamander, he is mostly in his own vivarium, where he helps many magical beasts. He attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He was sent by Dumbledore to stop Grindelwald from continuing his whish of conquering the world, but in the process of this quest a lot of events prevent him of going further into his mission. In the story you will read more about lots of new friendship and betrayals between the characters.
The theme is power and control and the hidden message is “The choices we make define who we are, and in the face of rising darkness, standing up for truth and justice is essential, even when it comes at great personal cost.” It means that when one has too much power, it will easily go to their head and take the control of their decisions to gain even more rule. It can also however force them to choose between their valued power or their loved ones, which ends in multiple betrayals.
I really like JK Rowling’s writing style, she gives a lot of details that help you imagine the charming world of wizardry in your head, she create enhancing suspense which causes a captivating story.
The development of Newt Scamander is extremely fascinated to me as you see him face his introverted side in the magic society, and it was really hard for him so you witness him grow into the person he will become at the end.
I really like this book, because I am really interested in the fantasy genre, I am also a fan of the author’s simplistic yet gripping writing style. I really like the plot of the story and find the characters truly amazing, I like the way they are pictured and developed throughout the book.
On the other hand I didn’t go through a lot of emotions during the story, the beginning left me a bit confused as you didn’t know about who you were reading about and only found later on that he was a big criminal. Were I didn’t really feel any emotions because in the end I didn’t relate to the story, even if it was a good book.
I recommend this book to those who like fantasy and have a lot of imagination, the whole story is based on magic. (So if you’re not a big fan of it I wouldn’t recommend it to you.)
To conclude, I really enjoyed reading Newt’s story. Since it belongs to my favorite genre I was sure I would like it, but I hadn’t expected it to be this intriguing, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone captured by the fantasy genre or who needs an escape from this world or who wants a return to the Harry Potter reality.
