The book I will give my opinion about is called ‘Dead Poets Society’. This novel written by Nancy H. Kleinbaum is written in 2006 and based on the movie ‘Dead Poets Society’ from 1989. I chose this young-adult fiction, because it was recommended by one of my classmates. She told me this story isn’t extremely long or difficult, which made me read it immediately.

This book is about Neil Perry, Todd Anderson, their friends, and John Keating, their English teacher, who taught them the art of poetry and told them to seize the day (“Carpe Diem”).

The story takes place in Welton Academy, an elite all-boys boarding school. The book tells the story of these young students and their individual problems, while also explaining their relationship with their English teacher and his influence on them.

John Keating tells his students that there was once a group of boys, who ran away to a cave to read poetry to each other, the Dead Poets Society. At this moment the story becomes really interesting.

This book is mainly about individuality and social conformity, the power of art in making individuals perform better, and the struggle of dreams & reality. The writing is lifelike and full of poetry. The characters go through interesting changes in this story: Neil Perry, whose tragic character shows the conflict between his dreams and his family, and Todd Anderson, who becomes more courageous after spending time in John Keating’s class. Charlie, Knox, Meeks, and Pitts make the story come together. This story reminds us that there is always a price to be paid for freedom of the self.

In my opinion, this is one of the best books I have ever read. I personally do not read often, but I am glad my classmate forced me to read this. It is a well-written story with characters I can sometimes empathize with. It had a great, but still, tragic ending. The fact that this book is only around 160 pages makes it easier and more fun to read by someone who gets bored very quickly.

I would definitely recommend this book to other students who do not like reading long and boring stories, or people who have lost their passion for reading.
