A survey was conducted to gather students' opinions from language classes on their preferences for the school newspaper. Thirty-four students shared their preferences and ideas for improvement, which will help create an entertaining and popular newspaper for our school community.

Preferred Newspaper Name

‘De VIIO Gazet’ was the most favored name option for the newspaper. ‘XOXO VIIO’ came in second place, followed by ‘Het Belang van VIIO’. Two of these names originate from an already-existing newspaper. ‘XOXO VIIO’ comes from the popular series ‘Gossip Girl’.

Publication Frequency and Format

Students expressed a preference for a monthly paper, available both online and in print.

Content Preferences

Students were asked which sections should definitely be included. The most preferred options were opinion pieces, crosswords/games, news, and interviews, with most of these options receiving more than 20 votes. Comics and creative writing obtained between 15 and 20 votes. Most students also expressed interest in external news, including world events and pop culture. They were also very enthusiastic about a ‘Teachers’ corner’, which includes a section in the paper where everyone can read interviews and fun facts about the teachers at VIIO.

Editorial Team Participation

Some of the respondents were willing to collaborate on the paper as journalist, layout designer, photographer, and interviewer. These were followed by researcher, illustrator, and columnist, with only two volunteers for each.

Opinion and Anonymous Sections

Lastly, students were asked if they think an opinion section and anonymous student posts should be included. Eighty-five percent answered positively to on both questions. It is important to oversee bullying and unacceptable behaviour, as this will only weaken our school spirit. This school paper is intended to share information, not negativity. No one should feel attacked or excluded when reading this newspaper.

In conclusion, many students were excited about this project and showed their preferences by answering the survey. This school paper will include important information about our school and its students. A Teachers’ Corner and an anonymous student section will be included, but no one should feel excluded because of it.
