The Mazda Mx5, first hit the market in 1989 in japan, sold as the "Eunos Roadster" and since then has revolutionized the way sports cars are built
Designer Tom Matano took inspiration from the Lotus Elan, maintaining the pop up headlights, convertible roof with the options of both soft top and hard top, 2 doors, 2 seater and rear wheel drive. The mk 1 was build from 1989 to 1997. In 1989, when the mx5s first hit the market, they came with a 1.6 dohc 16 valve in line 4. However, 4 years later, in 1993, mazda started building bigger 1.8s for the mx5 and started selling a very limited amount that year. Mazda official started selling them in 1994.
My Mazda Mx5 was built in 1993 in japan, therefore official an Eunos Roadster. The name Eunos was what the cars were sold as insted of "Mazda" and got its name from the ancient Greek "eu" meaning "good" and "nos", an abbreviation of "numbers" in English, which together was meant to signify a number, or assortment, of good things. Mine is a 1.8 model which for a 1993, is very rare to find. It is one of the C packages that was brought out In 1993 which included tan leather interior, a tan soft top and powered mirrors.
31 years later, the car i have now is a very different car from the day it left the factory. The car was imported from Japan to England where it was used for racing. There, it got a lot of weight reduction done, by striping the interior and removing things such as the windows and roof. It got its original susspension taken out and swapped for BC Racing coil overs. Nardi steering wheel and a 4 point.
