Part-Time Jobs for Highschool Students

Published 2025-09-09 09:28

For many students, getting a part-time job is essential—whether it’s to cover daily expenses, save for tuition, or gain work experience. However, despite their motivation, students often struggle to secure jobs that fit their schedules and experience levels. Many employers prefer candidates with prior work experience, the competition for jobs is intense, and rigid schedules make balancing work and school difficult. This article explores the main challenges students face when looking for part-time jobs, as mentioned by teenagers in Sibiu, and some possible solutions.

Difficulties Students Face in the Job Market

Lack of Experience

One of the biggest struggles students face is the experience requirement. Many jobs—even entry-level ones—ask for prior experience, creating a frustrating cycle: you need experience to get a job, but you need a job to gain experience. This makes it tough for students who are just starting out. As 16 year-old Lavinia high school student at Constantin Noica shared, “I’ve applied to several retail jobs, but they always ask for previous experience, which I don’t have. It’s frustrating because I want to work, but no one will give me a chance to prove my self.”

Rigid Work Schedules

Balancing school and work is another major challenge. Many employers prefer workers who can commit to a set schedule, but students have classes, assignments, and exams to juggle. Some jobs require late-night or weekend shifts, which may not always be manageable alongside schoolwork. Larisa, a 17-year-old high school student at Colegiul National Gheorghe Lazăr, noted, “It’s hard to find a job that fits around my school schedule. I’ve had employers say they need someone who can work weekends, but I’m usually busy with homework or family commitments.”

Many students face low wages and long, exhausting shifts in part-time jobs. Some employers underpay them, delay wages, or expect them to work overtime without proper compensation. In industries like retail and hospitality, students are often pressured into late-night or extra shifts, making it difficult to balance work and studies. With limited bargaining power, they have little choice but to accept these conditions.

Conclusion

Finding a part-time job as a high-school student is challenging due to limited opportunities and difficult working conditions. Many struggle to secure fair employment while balancing their education. Addressing these issues through better policies and support would create a more accessible job market for students.
